Saudi Arabia intercepts drones from Iraq after Houthi attack

Saudi Arabia announced Tuesday evening that its air defense forces intercepted and downed several drones launched from Iraqi territory. The drones were reportedly targeting oil facilities in the Kingdom's Eastern Province. This latest incident occurred shortly after a separate drone attack, attributed to Houthi rebels from Yemen, struck oil facilities in the same region.

In a statement released via the Ministry of Defense, spokesperson Major General Turki al-Maliki asserted that Saudi Arabia possesses the legitimate right to self-defense and to protect its national capabilities. He indicated that the Kingdom reserves the right to respond "at the appropriate time and place."

The Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strong condemnation of the Iran-backed militias responsible for the repeated attacks on energy sector targets within Saudi Arabia. The timing of the Iraqi-launched drone attacks is significant, occurring just before an anticipated visit by the Iraqi Prime Minister to Saudi Arabia this week. The previous day's drone attack prompted Riyadh to urge Baghdad to prevent its territory from being used as a launchpad for such assaults.

Following the initial drone attack, Iraqi Prime Minister Ali al-Zaidi ordered an investigation and pledged legal action against those found responsible. His office stated that Iraq is examining evidence and information provided by Saudi Arabia and will pursue legal action against any implicated parties based on the investigation's findings. Meanwhile, an Iranian military official, speaking to state broadcaster IRIB, firmly denied any connection to projectiles fired from other countries towards targets in Saudi Arabia, calling any such association a "major miscalculation."
