Saudi Healthcare Sees Growth in National Professionals, Focus on Midwifery

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia is witnessing a remarkable transformation in its healthcare sector, particularly in the development and qualification of its national workforce. Data from the National Center for Health Workforce Planning reveals a substantial increase, with over 460,000 Saudi health practitioners now serving across diverse specialties, out of a total of 800,000 registered professionals. This surge in local expertise signifies a major leap forward for the healthcare industry within the Kingdom.

Special attention has been given to nursing and midwifery, where Saudi cadres have seen continuous growth, now numbering 110,000 practitioners. This expansion has successfully boosted the localization rate in these critical professions from 30% in 2018 to an impressive 38% by 2026. While foreign expertise remains a component, with approximately 180,000 practitioners, the success of national qualification programs ensures a sustainable supply of skilled Saudi professionals, bringing the total workforce in these fields to over 290,000.

The profession of midwifery is highlighted as a cornerstone of the healthcare system, playing a crucial role in providing comprehensive care to women throughout pregnancy and childbirth, and extending support to newborns. This focus directly contributes to reducing mortality rates and enhancing the safety of both mothers and infants. The Ministry of Health's dedication to developing training programs and adhering to international standards is evident in the Kingdom's growing presence and success in regional nursing and midwifery awards, underscoring Saudi Arabia's commitment to delivering advanced medical care that rivals global standards.
