SD Tarakanita Bumijo Holds Independence Carnival at Yogyakarta Monument

To commemorate Indonesia's 81st Independence Day, SD Tarakanita Bumijo organized a vibrant "Merdeka Berkarakter, Berkarya untuk Indonesia" (Characterful Independence, Working for Indonesia) carnival.

The event, held on Friday, served as an educational platform to instill a love for the homeland and an appreciation for cultural diversity in the young students. Approximately 600 students participated, parading through the streets in a variety of costumes that reflected the spirit of independence.

Upon reaching the Tugu Yogyakarta monument, students performed short chants designed to evoke a sense of unity and love for Indonesia. The carnival aimed to provide a new experience for students, especially after a period where such open events were not possible.

Theresia Vina Indriyanti, the carnival's organizing committee chair, explained that the event was also a way to instill nationalism and express the core values of Tarakanita education, such as celebration and creativity. "We haven't had a carnival for several years. So, we are celebrating, celebrating important moments like Indonesia's Independence Day. Usually, we have competitions, but this time we wanted to try a carnival so the children have a new experience," she said.

The students' creativity was evident in their costumes, many of which were self-made using natural materials like leaves, and featured red and white motifs. Performances included traditional music and songs, with five distinct themes represented: red and white, traditional culture, professions, environmental protection, and scouting, the latter coinciding with the Scout Movement Day.
