Veteran actor Sean Penn has announced a surprising decision to cease attending award ceremonies, citing profound social discomfort and anxiety in large gatherings. The 65-year-old star revealed his feelings during a conversation with CNN journalist Kaitlan Collins at the Tribeca Film Festival on June 5.

"It's not just an awards show. I feel social discomfort in such places, there are simply too many people there," Penn explained, according to Variety. He elaborated that such events create tension because they require brief interactions with numerous individuals, a situation he finds taxing.

Penn admitted that he has chosen to avoid venues with large crowds. He confessed that attending ceremonies like the "Oscars" in the past brought him relief rather than joy. Penn has won the prestigious award twice for his roles in "Mystic River" and "Milk."

This year, instead of attending the 98th Academy Awards, Penn traveled to Kyiv, Ukraine, to express his support for the country amidst the ongoing war. While in the Ukrainian capital, he was presented with a symbolic metal Oscar statuette crafted from metal salvaged from a train damaged during the conflict. Penn found observing the ceremony from afar to be a much more pleasant experience than participating in person. He indicated that his final decision to withdraw from such events was solidified after attending the Golden Globe Awards.
