Search suspended for missing Austrian skipper near Šolta

Croatian authorities have suspended the search for an Austrian yachtsman who went missing on July 26 while sailing in the western part of the Split archipelago, near the island of Šolta. The decision to halt the search and rescue operation was made Thursday morning.

The coordinated search effort, which began immediately after the initial report of the disappearance, involved all available units from the Split Port Authority and its branches in Hvar and Milna. Patrol boats from the Maritime and Airport Police also provided support, along with the Croatian Coast Guard. The most intensive activities took place in the first two days, utilizing rescue boats, police vessels, a "Pilatus" aircraft, and a helicopter. A specialized drone was also employed throughout the operation.

Despite extensive efforts and resources, the missing yachtsman was not found. The Ministry of the Sea, Transport, and Infrastructure stated that further actions related to this incident will continue as part of regular navigation safety surveillance activities.

In a separate incident on Thursday night, a three-person crew was rescued near the island of Svetac after their Croatian-flagged vessel caught fire and sank. The fire started around 1:45 a.m. in Slatina bay. The crew abandoned the vessel promptly and were unharmed. The ministry issued a navigation warning due to the sunken vessel and is investigating the cause of the fire.
