Panama's Ministry of Agricultural Development (MIDA) has initiated the distribution of seeds to establish 295 family agroecological farms nationwide. This program, part of the "Familias Unidas" initiative, aims to enhance the nutritional security of rural families by promoting low-cost cultivation methods and environmentally sound agricultural practices.

The seeds provided include staple crops like rice, corn, and beans, alongside vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, green beans, squash, and plantains. These small-scale farms are designed to supplement family diets, making fresh produce more accessible and affordable. The MIDA is also offering practical training in organic and agroecological farming through its Field Schools methodology.

To support the program, MIDA has acquired essential machinery, including a 15 HP walk-behind tractor and three tillers. These tools will be used to prepare the land for the family farms and for agricultural projects in educational institutions. This initiative is a collaboration between MIDA, the Savings Bank, and the Ministry of Education, aiming to bolster food production for school canteens.

The "Familias Unidas" program underscores a commitment to sustainable agriculture and food self-sufficiency. By providing training, tools, and environmentally conscious production practices, MIDA seeks to empower rural families and contribute to the availability of fresh food, while also supporting the educational sector's food programs.
