Senate Minority Whip Tony Nwoye Defects to NDC Amid ADC Crises

The Nigerian Senate witnessed a significant political maneuver today as the Senate Minority Whip, Tony Nwoye, announced his defection from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC). This move, formally communicated through a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, underscores the persistent internal turmoil plaguing the ADC.

Senator Nwoye, representing the Anambra North Senatorial District, explicitly stated that the decision was necessitated by "internal divisions and the ongoing multiple litigations at the Federal High Court and court judgement affecting the party." He lamented that these issues have "adversely affected the party’s formation, cohesion and overall stability," making his continued membership untenable.

This latest party switch is not the first for Nwoye. He was initially elected to the Senate in 2023 under the banner of the Labour Party. His subsequent move to the ADC and now to the NDC highlights the fluid nature of political alliances in Nigeria and the challenges faced by emerging political parties in maintaining internal harmony and legal standing.
