SEP cancels teacher promotion exam due to irregularities; plans repeat

Mexico's Secretariat of Public Education (SEP) has canceled a horizontal promotion exam for teachers after discovering significant irregularities and misconduct during its administration. The exam, designed to provide educators with better income opportunities without requiring them to leave their teaching positions, was taken by over 50,000 teachers last weekend.

The SEP announced that the test will be rescheduled and administered again on August 9. This decision follows alerts from the Unit for the System for the Career of Teachers and Educators (Usicamm) prior to the exam, warning of potential fraud. Usicamm had formally reported an individual who was offering assistance for the exam for a fee of 8,000 pesos, labeling the offer as fraudulent.

During the exam itself, Usicamm documented inconsistencies and improper conduct among participants. Detected anomalies included attempts at identity impersonation and the use of unauthorized electronic devices while taking the test. The authority shared photographic evidence of these violations, such as individuals using mobile phones, though these posts were later removed from educational authority social media channels.

Usicamm stated that participants found to be involved in these fraudulent practices have been removed from the process. Additionally, the SEP is reviewing complaints from teachers who reported receiving exam materials not aligned with their educational level. The cancellation and planned repetition of the exam highlight the SEP's commitment to ensuring the integrity of the teacher promotion process.
