September Brings 27 Days of Pressure as MLB Division Races Tighten

September begins with only 27 days of regular-season games left, and the path to the October World Series is still unsettled for much of Major League Baseball.

Teams outside the top spot must resolve their positions quickly if they want to avoid the Wild Card route. Historical figures favor the leaders: since 1996, 80% of teams at the top of their divisions at the start of September have held on to win the division.

The six current leaders are the Rays, White Sox, Astros, Braves, Brewers and Dodgers. The numbers suggest that most will remain on top, although last season offered a warning. Only four of the six teams leading their divisions at the beginning of September, the Blue Jays, Phillies, Brewers and Dodgers, eventually won their divisions.

Detroit surrendered a 9.5-game advantage after entering September, the biggest collapse since the Cubs’ 4.5-game loss of a lead in 1969, according to Elias Sports Bureau statistics. The Tigers still reached the postseason, but only as a Wild Card team. Houston also fell from first place to elimination, allowing Cleveland to complete the biggest division or league comeback since 1900.

The September advantage extends to the World Series. Nineteen of the 29 champions since 1996, excluding the shortened 2020 season, led their divisions when the month began. The Astros, Brewers and Dodgers also held first place at the start of September last year. Atlanta had not led at this point since 2023, while Tampa Bay and Chicago last occupied their division’s top spot in 2021.
