September is drowning Lithuania: Nearly a month's rain falls in a day

Lithuania received almost a full month's worth of September rain in a single day in some areas. Meteo LT recorded 41.2 millimeters in Dotnuva, in Kėdainiai district, between 9 a.m. on September 4 and 9 a.m. on September 5. That amounted to 92% of the monthly norm.

Other locations also saw significant rainfall. Ukmergė received 37.8 millimeters, or 71% of its September norm. Nida recorded 35.2 millimeters, equal to 45%, while Molėtai received 32.1 millimeters, or 56% of the monthly amount.

Rain fell intermittently across the country on Friday and overnight into Saturday. In some places it was heavy, with thunderstorms and wind gusts reaching 15 to 20 meters per second. Temperatures ranged from 17 to 21 degrees Celsius during the day and fell to 11 to 15 degrees overnight.

Saturday was expected to remain unsettled, with intermittent and locally heavy rain and further thunderstorms. Southwest and west winds were forecast at 9 to 14 meters per second, with gusts of 15 to 20 meters per second in many areas and up to 23 meters per second on the coast. Temperatures were expected to reach 14 to 19 degrees.
