Serbian Education Minister confirms inappropriate behavior at Mrčajevci school

Serbia's Minister of Education, Dejan Vuk Stanković, confirmed that an incident involving inappropriate behavior occurred at a primary school in Mrčajevci. While the Higher Public Prosecutor's Office in Čačak dismissed allegations of sexual abuse, Stanković stated that an act of exhibitionism took place, leading to the implementation of relevant protocols.

"An inappropriate form of behavior occurred in front of children, and in accordance with protocols, pedagogical and psychological work with children has been ordered for the 2026/2027 school year," Stanković announced during a parliamentary debate. He added that while a city-level inspection was conducted, a republican inspection will also be engaged due to the case's sensitivity, to re-examine all aspects.

Stanković also addressed media reports concerning alleged pressures related to faculty appointments and employment terminations at higher education institutions. He firmly stated that the government and the ministry have no involvement in such cases. "The Government has no influence on such matters. The University prescribes all criteria and procedures for employment and advancement," he clarified, emphasizing the autonomy of academic institutions.

Reflecting on the past academic year, Stanković noted its completion despite disruptions from what he described as illegal blockades and plenums. He also highlighted the introduction of the SPIRI system to enhance accountability and transparency in the use of budgetary funds, assuring that no faculty income would be affected.
