Seven Killed in Israeli Airstrike on Southern Lebanon Home; Military Cites Hezbollah Post

An Israeli airstrike on a residential house in southern Lebanon has resulted in the deaths of at least seven people and injured two others, the Lebanese Health Ministry reported. The strike, which hit a house on the outskirts of the village of Ansar, has further escalated tensions between Israel and the Hezbollah militia.

The Israeli military confirmed the operation, identifying the target as a post belonging to the "Hezbollah terrorist organization." According to the Israeli military, the strike was a retaliatory measure for previous attacks on Israeli soldiers. These attacks reportedly occurred at the Ali-al-Taher Pass, located within a unilaterally declared "security zone" in southern Lebanon by Israel.

Local reports from the scene, including observations by a dpa news agency photographer, indicated that residents also referred to the targeted location as a Hezbollah base. The Israeli military has established a "security zone" in southern Lebanon, encompassing approximately 620 square kilometers, which constitutes about six percent of the country's territory. This zone is intended to prevent Hezbollah attacks on northern Israel.

This incident is the latest in a series of repeated violations of the ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah. Both parties frequently accuse each other of breaching the truce. A framework agreement was reached in June between Israel and Lebanon concerning the disarmament of Hezbollah, the phased withdrawal of Israeli troops, and the deployment of the Lebanese army in the region. However, Hezbollah rejects direct talks with Israel and refuses to disarm.
