Sewer pipe failure forces Toronto food bank to close

A critical sewer pipe failure has forced the temporary closure of the Daily Bread Food Bank's Allan Gardens location in Toronto, disrupting essential services for hundreds of families each week. Operations were suspended on July 31 after the pipe failed at the food bank's site within St. Luke's United Church.

The closure affects the distribution of food to about 650 families weekly, who rely on the bank for two to three days of provisions. The organization announced it would remain closed for the remainder of the week, impacting immediate access to food for those in need.

In response to the infrastructure issue, the food bank's board of directors has decided to actively seek a new, permanent location. This move is intended to provide long-term stability and ensure the safety of its operations and the community it serves.

Benjamin Blais, director of the food bank, expressed determination despite the setback. "While this infrastructure issue is a temporary setback, our commitment to our neighbors is unshakeable," he stated. The organization, which receives no government funding and relies entirely on private donations, is appealing to landlords, donors, and community partners for assistance in finding a suitable new space.
