'Shoulder to shoulder': Israel and Serbia launch strategic dialogue, negotiate Free Trade Agreement

The announcement, made by Foreign Ministers Gideon Sa'ar and Marko Đurić in Jerusalem, detailed plans for a Free Trade Agreement, a Joint Economic Committee, and the establishment of an Israel-Serbia Chamber of Commerce. These initiatives signal a clear intent to bolster economic ties and facilitate greater trade and investment between Israeli and Serbian companies. Serbia's Foreign Minister Đurić expressed pride in the continuous strengthening of bilateral relations, noting Serbia's historical recognition of Israel's right to exist since 1917.

From an Israeli perspective, Serbia is viewed as a strategically important partner in the Western Balkans and Europe. Foreign Minister Sa'ar's emphasis on strengthening ties with the Western Balkans aligns with Israel's foreign policy goals. The dialogue also touches upon shared historical experiences, with Sa'ar recalling the suffering of both Jewish and Serbian populations during the Holocaust and praising the Serbian spirit. This shared history, coupled with Serbia's recent support for Israel following the October 7th events, forms a strong foundation for the enhanced strategic partnership.
