Singapore acting minister resigns over interaction with woman

Singapore's acting Minister for Muslim Affairs, Associate Professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, has resigned from his government and parliamentary positions. The decision follows an interaction with a civilian woman that Prime Minister Lawrence Wong deemed did not meet the expected standards for politicians and Members of Parliament.

The issue came to light about a month ago when the Prime Minister's Office received an email from the woman regarding her interactions with Faishal. Wong promptly ordered an investigation, interviewing both parties separately. The interactions reportedly occurred through online messages and at public events.

After considering the matter, Muhammad Faishal accepted that his actions did not meet the standards and submitted his letter of resignation.

Both individuals made allegations of harassment against each other, prompting a police investigation. However, authorities concluded that no criminal offenses were committed by either party after reviewing the facts and consulting the Attorney-General's Chambers. No criminal charges will be filed.

Despite the absence of criminal wrongdoing, Wong highlighted that Faishal's conduct raised separate questions about whether it met the high standards required of those in public office. Faishal acknowledged this and submitted his resignation. Senior Minister of State for Defence and Sustainability and the Environment, Zaqy Mohamad, will take over as acting Minister for Muslim Affairs. Wong expressed gratitude for Faishal's contributions over two decades of public service.
