Slovaks report 260 bear sightings in four months; caution advised during mating season

Slovakia's natural beauty is often accompanied by the presence of wildlife, and this year, brown bears are making their presence known. From the beginning of January to the end of April, conservationists have logged an impressive 260 sightings across the country. This figure, compiled by the State Nature Conservancy of the Slovak Republic (ŠOP SR), highlights the active bear population and the importance of coexisting safely with these animals.

The data reveals a significant number of interventions by national park teams, accounting for 158 reports, while the State Nature Conservancy's own teams registered 102. The High Tatras, a jewel of Slovakia's natural heritage, saw the highest concentration of sightings with 93 reports, followed closely by the Liptovský Mikuláš district with 81. Other areas like Malá and Veľká Fatra, Nízke Tatry National Park, and regions around Banská Bystrica and Poprad also reported notable activity.

This surge in sightings, particularly during the ongoing mating season, serves as a crucial reminder for outdoor enthusiasts. Conservationists are urging the public to exercise increased caution when venturing into nature, especially in areas with frequent bear activity. As reported by SME, this is not just a matter of wildlife management but also public safety, underscoring the delicate balance between human recreation and the protection of Slovakia's wild inhabitants.
