South Korea Extends Application Period for Agricultural Fuel Subsidies

In response to escalating global fuel prices, the South Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has announced an extended application period for crucial subsidies aimed at supporting farmers. This initiative provides financial relief for tax-exempt diesel used in three types of agricultural machinery—tractors, cultivators, and combines—as well as for heating oil utilized in horticultural facilities.

The government has allocated a significant supplementary budget to this program, recognizing the impact of rising energy costs on agricultural productivity. The subsidies are designed to cover a portion of the price increase for diesel and heating oil when prices exceed a set benchmark. This measure is particularly timely given the recent exacerbation of Middle Eastern tensions, which have directly contributed to a surge in international oil prices, pushing the cost of tax-exempt diesel above the 1,500 won per liter mark.

Farmers are encouraged to apply for these subsidies through their local agricultural cooperatives by October 31. The ministry emphasizes the importance of widespread awareness and participation, urging local agricultural cooperatives to actively promote the program. This support system is vital for ensuring the continued stability and profitability of the agricultural sector, particularly for those relying on machinery and heated facilities to maintain their operations.
