South Korea issues nationwide malaria warning

South Korean health officials have raised a nationwide malaria alert, citing the detection of the malaria parasite in mosquitoes collected in the country's northern regions.

The Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency (KDCA) announced that genetic material from the Plasmodium vivax malaria parasite was identified in Anopheles mosquitoes. These mosquitoes were gathered in Paju and Yeoncheon County, areas in the northern part of South Korea, during a surveillance period from July 27 to August 2.

"The detection of the parasite in vector mosquitoes means the possibility of contracting malaria through mosquito bites will increase," the KDCA stated in a release. This nationwide warning comes after an earlier advisory issued on June 22, which noted an increase in the population of disease-carrying mosquitoes. Subsequently, alerts were expanded to five areas due to localized malaria clusters and growing mosquito populations.

Historically, malaria cases in South Korea have been concentrated near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) bordering North Korea. However, health authorities observe that the high-risk areas have been expanding in recent years. Residents and visitors in these affected regions are advised to take precautions, such as avoiding outdoor activities during nighttime, wearing protective clothing, and using mosquito repellents, nets, and screens. Individuals experiencing symptoms like fever and chills, which could indicate malaria, are urged to seek testing at public health centers or medical facilities.
