South Korea's July Exports Near $100 Billion on Semiconductor Boom, Annual $1 Trillion Target in Sight

South Korea's export performance in July reached nearly $98.9 billion, making it the second-highest monthly total ever recorded and signaling strong momentum towards the ambitious annual goal of $1 trillion in exports.

The surge was largely propelled by a dramatic increase in semiconductor exports, which grew by 178.8% compared to the previous year, reaching $41 billion. This significant rise is attributed to heightened demand for high-value memory chips, such as High Bandwidth Memory (HBM) for AI servers, coupled with rising prices for DRAM and NAND flash memory.

Beyond semiconductors, 19 of the top 20 export items saw growth. Automobile exports increased by 7.0%, and shipments of ships rose by 46.9%. Despite a decrease in export volumes for petroleum products and petrochemicals, higher prices led to a 34.1% and 10.3% increase in their export value, respectively.

Geographically, exports to China jumped by 96.2% to $21.7 billion, exceeding $20 billion for the second consecutive month. Shipments to the United States also saw a substantial increase of 69.0%, reaching $17.4 billion. The trade surplus for July was $30.3 billion, remaining above $30 billion for the second month in a row.

While optimism is high for reaching the $1 trillion annual export target, potential headwinds exist. Concerns linger over potential U.S. trade actions, including tariffs and investigations into overcapacity, which could impact future exports.
