Speaking to reporters on August 14, Ahn directly addressed claims made after a meeting with alumni association leaders, stating, "How can I say that we will maintain the current system while integrating the service academies?" He added, "Basically, I think it is difficult." This clarification comes after alumni groups asserted that Ahn had indicated a willingness to consider maintaining the existing structure. The defense ministry later issued a statement denying that the maintenance of the current system was under review, leading to a public dispute over the minister's remarks.

Ahn's comments were made during his first day back at the Ministry of National Defense headquarters in Yongsan, Seoul, after a four-year period. The ministry had relocated to the Joint Chiefs of Staff building when the presidential office moved to the Blue House. The return to the original headquarters, which involved a phased relocation process costing over 55 billion won (approximately $40 million), marks a significant moment for Ahn. He recalled a promise made during the 2023 parliamentary audit, telling the 550,000 members of the defense family that he would "give it back to you in just three years."
