South Korean men's volleyball to introduce salary cap, limits to decrease by 2029-30 season

In a significant move to address financial disparities within the sport, the Korea Volleyball Federation (KOVO) has officially adopted a player salary cap for the men's V-League. This decision, made during a board meeting, signals a new era for player compensation and team management, aiming to foster a more equitable and stable professional league.

The new system, mirroring the one implemented for the women's league, will cap individual player salaries. This cap will be calculated based on a percentage of a team's total salary and option budgets. Crucially, the maximum individual salary will decrease year by year, reaching 962 million won by the 2029-2030 season. This gradual reduction is a deliberate strategy to manage the league's finances and prevent excessive spending.

KOVO stated that the primary objective is to curb the trend of exorbitant salaries being concentrated among a select few star players. By setting these limits, the federation hopes to narrow the gap between top earners and the rest of the playing pool, thereby improving the overall financial health of the league and ensuring greater stability for all clubs. This move is expected to encourage more balanced team building and potentially reduce the financial pressure on individual clubs.

Beyond the salary cap, the federation also approved changes to international competition eligibility, allowing the current season's champions, rather than the previous season's, to represent the V-League in international club tournaments. This adjustment aims to boost the league's international competitiveness and relevance.
