South Korean party official pledges 'special compensation' for Honam region

Jeong Cheong-rae, the chief standing election committee chairman for South Korea's Democratic Party, has pledged "special compensation" for the Honam region, acknowledging a significant "debt" the party owes to the area. Speaking at a campaign rally for a local mayoral candidate in Gurye, South Jeolla Province, Jeong emphasized Honam's crucial historical role in national defense and its sacrifices during times of crisis. "Just as the saying goes, 'Without Honam, there is no nation,' Honam has always been the first to rise and fight to protect the country when it faced peril," Jeong stated. He drew a connection between the region's struggles and former President Kim Dae-jung, recognizing the "tears, pain, and sorrow" of Honam residents who supported him. To address this historical debt, Jeong highlighted a plan by President Lee Jae-myung to integrate Jeonnam and Gwangju, committing 20 trillion won (approximately $14.5 billion USD) over four years. He asserted that this integration would bring substantial, tangible financial benefits to the region. Jeong stressed the urgent need for victory in Honam, urging residents to demonstrate their support for President Lee and validate the legacy of Kim Dae-jung. "We ask that you show from Honam that President Lee is right and Kim Dae-jung was correct," he said, promising full party support for the region's success.
