Hong Joon-pyo Attacks Han Dong-hoon: ‘How Can a Conservative Traitor Criticize Jang Dong-hyuk?’

Former Daegu mayor Hong Joon-pyo has accused independent lawmaker Han Dong-hoon of hypocrisy for attacking People Power Party leader Jang Dong-hyuk.

How can you criticize Chairman Jang, who is fighting well, with any sense of shame?

Hong wrote on Facebook that Han had no right to criticize Jang, whom he said was fighting well. He called Han “a conservative traitor” who had betrayed the person who supported him for 20 years and then helped hand power to the Lee Jae-myung administration.

Hong also said Han was nothing more than an illusion created by former President Yoon Suk Yeol and had never won a political fight. He pointed to Han’s failure to secure the arrest of Lee, then the Democratic Party leader, despite a two-year investigation involving about 200 prosecutors, and to the ruling camp’s heavy defeat in the general election.

The dispute followed an interview in which Jang said he was open to an alliance or merger with all forces that shared conservative values, but did not believe he should ally with Han while serving as party leader. Han responded that Jang had once promised to protect him until the end, then accused him of distorting facts and encouraging infighting within the conservative camp.

The last thing Chairman Jang Dong-hyuk said when he met me, just before stepping down as party leader over President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment, was, ‘I will protect Chairman Han until the end.’

Hong, who left the People Power Party after losing its presidential primary last April, has continued criticizing Yoon, Han and the party. He has also previously mocked Han by calling him “Joseon’s top chewing gum” instead of “Joseon’s top prosecutor.”
