South Korean Woman Gets 3 Years for Neglecting Husband for Insurance Money

A shocking case of spousal neglect leading to death has resulted in a prison sentence for a 40-year-old woman in South Korea. The woman, identified as Ms. A, was handed a three-year jail term by the 1st Criminal Division of the Bucheon Branch of the Incheon District Court. Prosecutors revealed that Ms. A neglected her husband, Mr. B (47), at their home in Gimpo, Gyeonggi Province, leading to his death from severe malnutrition on April 27 last year. Despite her legal obligation as a spouse to ensure her husband received proper medical care and protection, she failed to provide him with adequate nutrition. The court's investigation also uncovered a disturbing plan: Ms. A had arranged to take out a life insurance policy on her husband on April 3, with a payout of 200 million won (approximately $150,000 USD), and subsequently forged documents related to the insurance contract without his knowledge.

While Ms. A claimed she did not anticipate her husband's death, the court found her actions suspicious. "It is suspected that the crime was committed with the intent to receive insurance money, fully aware of the possibility of death."

The court acknowledged mitigating factors, including Ms. A's past role in supporting her husband for an extended period and her history of delusional disorder. However, the severity of the neglect and the calculated attempt to profit from her husband's death led to the significant prison sentence.
