South Koreans Arrested for International Marijuana Smuggling Ring Using Passports

Fourteen individuals have been apprehended, with seven already in custody, for their roles as drug mules. This operation highlights a worrying trend: criminal organizations are leveraging the visa-free travel privileges afforded to South Korean citizens, which are a testament to the nation's global standing, to facilitate their illicit activities.

The arrested individuals were reportedly hired by a syndicate based in Thailand. They were tasked with transporting significant quantities of marijuana, ranging from 25 to 60 kilograms per trip, to destinations in Europe, including the UK, Belgium, and Turkey. In return for their services, which involved posing as tourists, they received a modest payment of 5 to 10 million won and a week of 'tourism' before returning to South Korea. This scheme preyed on unemployed individuals, offering them a seemingly easy way to earn money.
