Spain prepares for rare solar eclipse amid heat and wildfires

Spaniards are eagerly anticipating a rare total solar eclipse, with millions in the country's northern and central regions poised for optimal viewing of the celestial event. The eclipse, set to begin around sunset, will briefly cast parts of the Iberian Peninsula into darkness as the sun, moon, and Earth align.

However, the spectacle arrives amidst challenging conditions, as Spain grapples with scorching summer temperatures and ongoing wildfires. Authorities have launched a significant public safety campaign, establishing 350 official viewing sites while restricting access to 123 others due to environmental risks. The Interior Ministry highlighted the need for extreme preventive measures, citing dry vegetation and intense pressure on natural areas.

Law enforcement is taking extensive precautions, with over 33,500 officers to be deployed. Visitors are strongly advised against lighting fires, littering, or parking in dry vegetation areas. The Interior Ministry stressed that high temperatures, dry vegetation, and projected travel necessitate these measures. The importance of using specialized eclipse glasses for safe viewing was also emphasized by Telmo Fernández Castro, director of the Madrid Planetarium, to prevent eye damage from solar radiation.
