Rare Video captures hippo charging tourist boat in Botswana

A tourist boat carrying visitors in northern Botswana was forced to accelerate rapidly to escape a hippopotamus that charged aggressively towards the vessel. The dramatic encounter was captured on video by Oznur Bell, who was on the boat with her three children and a friend.

However, the hippo became agitated, prompting the guide to warn passengers to hold on before speeding away. Bell's footage shows the large animal pursuing the boat through the water as it created a wake.

Although the guides appeared to smile as they escaped, Bell noted their expressions were of relief rather than amusement, and everyone aboard was genuinely concerned. The guides later informed the group that while hippos are highly territorial, a hippo chasing a boat is relatively uncommon.
