Spain's Jenni Hermoso sees retirement as distant prospect

Jenni Hermoso, the 36-year-old Spanish World Cup champion, has indicated that retirement from professional football is not on her immediate horizon. Hermoso, who recently departed from Mexican club Tigres, expressed her intention to continue playing in Europe and to keep enjoying the sport that has been her life.

"I'm not even thinking about retirement. I haven't taken that first step to say, 'I can't anymore.' Physically and mentally, I want to keep enjoying this thing I've done all my life and that has made me so happy," Hermoso stated. She conveyed her happiness in Mexico and her desire to continue enjoying football, her passion, until she feels she can no longer play at a high level.

While maintaining suspense about her next destination, Hermoso hinted that her future might be closer to home. She acknowledged that leaving Monterrey and Mexico was not easy, as she had put down roots there. "I think I leave a small gift in this city. I arrived with the dream of being a champion, and I achieved it, so now I must go in search of new challenges that will keep me excited to continue playing football at the highest level," she added.

Hermoso also shared her pride in having contributed to the development and visibility of the Mexican women's football league since its inception in 2017. "The league in Mexico has many good things, but there are still many things it must improve to continue growing. One of them is continuing to take care of the players," she concluded. Hermoso's reflections came after participating in the inauguration of a football field at a children's home in Monterrey.
