Spain seizes 30 tons of cocaine worth 812 million euros

Spain has once again demonstrated its critical role in intercepting illicit drug shipments destined for Europe, with a record seizure of 30 tons of cocaine valued at 812 million euros. The operation, conducted by the Guardia Civil, resulted in the arrest of 23 crew members – 17 from the Philippines, five Dutch, and one from Suriname – aboard a ship flying the Comoros flag. This haul is not just a national triumph but a significant international blow against drug trafficking networks.

The interception occurred on May 1st in international waters off the Canary Islands. Reports from union sources within the Guardia Civil described the ship's hold as "completely filled" with drug bales, calling it a "historic seizure." The vessel had departed from Freetown, Sierra Leone, and was reportedly headed towards Benghazi, Libya. However, investigators believe the ultimate destination was Europe, as transshipment to smaller vessels was likely planned, given the impracticality of distributing such a massive quantity in Libya.

Spain's strategic location, with its historical ties to Latin America and proximity to North Africa, positions it as a crucial entry point for drugs into the European continent. Previous large seizures, such as the 13 tons of cocaine in Algeciras in 2024 and nearly 10 tons at sea in January, underscore the persistent challenge and the effectiveness of Spanish law enforcement in combating this menace.
