Spain tightens border controls with Italy over migrant issue

Spain will implement temporary border checks on travelers arriving from Italy, a retaliatory measure following Italy's own border scrutiny. The Spanish Interior Ministry stated these checks would be in effect from midnight Saturday local time until September 7.

This decision comes amid ongoing pressure from irregular migration flows affecting Italy. Spain had previously threatened retaliatory action if Italy did not promptly withdraw its border checks, a demand Rome rejected. This rare dispute between two European Union and NATO member states erupted after tens of thousands of people crossed from Morocco into the Spanish North African territory of Ceuta on July 30 and 31.

The unprecedented influx, which reportedly claimed over 80 lives, angered EU member states advocating for stricter approaches to irregular migration. Italy, in response, suspended its participation in the visa-free Schengen travel agreement with Spain for one month.

The Spanish government on Friday deemed Italy's action unfair, contrary to EU interests, and discriminatory towards Spanish citizens. Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares described the move as 'a torpedo fired at the ship of European unity.' Spanish police are reportedly monitoring online rumors about potential new migrant arrivals in Ceuta in mid-August.
