Speaker Bagbin justifies recall of Parliament gor 5-Day emergency sitting

Speaker of Parliament Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin has justified recalling the legislative body for an emergency five-day sitting, which is set to conclude on August 28, 2026. He explained that the recall was initiated following a letter from President John Dramani Mahama on August 11, 2026, requesting Parliament's attention to urgent matters before the planned October 2026 session.

During the emergency meeting, Parliament is scheduled to deliberate on and pass the Banks and Specialised Deposit-Taking Institutions (Amendment) Bill, 2026. Additionally, the House will vet two ministerial nominees: Mahama Ayariga for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, and Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings for Environment, Science and Technology. The session also includes the consideration of three nominees for the Supreme Court: Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko, Justice Edward Amoako Asante, and Justice Anthony Forson Junior.
