Special Crane Lifts Telescope Out of Vienna's Urania Observatory

Vienna's historic Urania Observatory is undergoing a significant upgrade with the installation of a new, state-of-the-art telescope. This marks a new chapter for Austria's oldest public observatory, ensuring its continued role in astronomical education and public engagement.

The delicate operation involved a specialized crane carefully lifting the old double telescope out of the observatory's dome, situated 26 meters above street level. The removed instrument, a 46-year-old double telescope, has served the observatory well, but advancements in technology necessitate its replacement to provide clearer views of fainter celestial objects.

This modernization reflects a commitment to scientific advancement and public outreach. The new reflecting telescope, expected to be fully installed by November, promises enhanced capabilities, allowing for more detailed observations and a deeper understanding of the cosmos.
