"Spider-Man: Brand New Day" Shatters Box Office Record, Surpassing "Avengers: Endgame"

Spider-Man has swung past the Avengers to claim the title of North America's highest-grossing opening weekend ever. "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" has raked in an astounding $360 million in U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Sony Pictures.

This monumental figure eclipses the previous record held by "Avengers: Endgame," which debuted with $357 million in 2019. Sony had initially projected "Spider-Man" to earn around $355 million, a number that would have fallen just short of the "Endgame" record. However, the fourth installment starring Tom Holland exceeded all expectations.

Tom Rothman, chairman and CEO of Sony Pictures Motion Picture Group, expressed pride in the achievement, stating, "Records are meant to be broken, but we will be very proud of this one, for as long as we hold it." Before "Avengers: Endgame," no film had ever surpassed $300 million in its domestic opening weekend.

The success of "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," alongside "The Odyssey" which shares key actors Holland, Zendaya, and Jon Bernthal, has also significantly contributed to a strong overall performance for North American cinemas. The domestic box office has seen a rise of over 15% compared to last year, with ticket sales exceeding $6.2 billion to date.
