Spring's Bounty: Yanggu and Hongcheon Host Wild Vegetable Festivals

Spring has truly sprung in Gangwon Province, and this year, both Yanggu and Hongcheon are inviting everyone to celebrate the season with vibrant wild vegetable festivals. These events are more than just markets; they are a deep dive into the local culture and the bounty of the land, offering a sensory experience that captures the essence of Korean spring.

The 'Youth Yanggu Gomchwi Festival,' now in its 23rd year, is set to enchant visitors from May 2nd to 5th at the Yanggu Sports Park. Under the banner of 'Royal Gomchwi,' the festival promises a rich tapestry of activities. Families will delight in the 'Catch! Teenieping' pop-up playground and a kids' adventure zone featuring a mobile zoo and air bounce. Musical performances, including concerts by DJ DOC, Park Da-hye, Jang Yoon-jeong, and the group Oksangdalbit, will light up the evenings. Culinary explorations await with gomchwi pesto pizza and ice cream making, alongside traditional experiences like rice cake pounding and tasting sessions, all complemented by the unique flavor of premium gomchwi rice wine.

Meanwhile, the 8th Hongcheon Wild Vegetable Festival will take place from May 1st to 3rd at Torisup Park. This year, the festival aims to go beyond mere sales, focusing on promoting the excellence of local wild vegetables and expanding their market reach. Attendees can discover a variety of rare mountain vegetables like wild chives, feather pygeum, and Korean angelica. Interactive experiences include planting wild ginseng seedlings, crafting personalized goods, natural dyeing, and wild vegetable art. A unique self-service restaurant will allow visitors to grill fresh wild vegetables with local Hongcheon pork, creating a truly local dining experience. The main stage will buzz with performances from local clubs, a dance festival, and a senior singing contest.
