Sri Lanka: Deadly Riot Erupts at Mahara Prison, Follows Previous Deadly Disturbance

A riot erupted at the Mahara prison complex in Sri Lanka's Western Province on Saturday, August 1, resulting in the death of at least one inmate. This incident follows closely on the heels of another deadly disturbance at a prison less than a month prior, which claimed the lives of nearly thirty individuals.

Police confirmed that one inmate had died and several others were injured. A fire broke out in one of the prison buildings, and ambulances were seen leaving the facility. The exact causes of the current unrest remain unknown. In response, authorities have significantly reinforced security in the area, deploying special forces and army personnel to regain control.

To prevent relatives of inmates from approaching the prison, an indefinite curfew has been imposed on three surrounding districts: Kendaliyadda Road West, Kendaliyadda Road North, and Dambuwa. This measure aims to contain the situation and facilitate the security forces' operations.

The Mahara prison riots occur just weeks after deadly clashes at the nearby Negombo prison, where over thirty people, including ten guards, lost their lives. These recurring incidents highlight ongoing issues within Sri Lanka's correctional system. Earlier in June, the UN resident coordinator in Sri Lanka urged the government to enhance protection and increase investment in the prison system.

Recent reports indicate severe overcrowding in Sri Lankan prisons, with a capacity rate of 286.6%. Furthermore, over 60% of inmates are awaiting trial, suggesting systemic delays and contributing factors to the volatile conditions within the facilities.
