Sri Lanka parliamentary committee's report on container inspection nears completion

A special parliamentary committee in Sri Lanka is nearing the conclusion of its investigation into the release of 323 shipping containers without adequate inspection. The committee is expected to submit its final report by the end of August, according to parliamentary sources.

The investigation's work is substantially complete. A draft of the final report will first be presented to the committee members. Following their review and recommendations, the final report will be compiled. The committee was initially mandated to submit its report within three months of its first meeting.

Opposition members had requested that the individuals who served on the Presidential Commission, which conducted an earlier inquiry into the same incident, be summoned to appear before the parliamentary committee. However, the committee chairman stated that summoning them is unnecessary, as they have already submitted their own final report on the matter.

The incident involves the release of 323 containers without proper inspection, a matter that has drawn significant attention. The chairman of the parliamentary special committee investigating this issue is Minister of Justice and National Integration, Attorney-at-Law Harshan Nanayakkara.
