STPM teachers need permanent positions, says union

The Malaysian education system faces calls for urgent reform within its Form Six (Tingkatan Enam) structure, particularly concerning the staffing and recognition of teachers responsible for preparing students for the Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) examinations.

According to Fouzi Singon, the Secretary-General of the National Union of the Teaching Profession (NUTP), teachers in this crucial pre-university level often lack dedicated, permanent positions. This situation forces many STPM teachers to divide their time and expertise by teaching classes at other levels, potentially diluting their focus and effectiveness.

Singon emphasized the need for immediate improvements, advocating for the implementation of permanent staffing structures specifically for STPM teachers. He also called for the introduction of special allowances to acknowledge the unique demands and importance of their role in the education system.

The NUTP's stance highlights a perceived inadequacy in the current system, suggesting that without these structural changes, the quality of education for students pursuing the STPM may be compromised. The union seeks to ensure that STPM teachers are adequately supported and recognized for their contribution to higher education pathways in Malaysia.
