Street near Naples to be named after partisan doctor from Franja hospital

The town of Giugliano, near Naples, plans to honor Antonio Ciccarelli, an Italian doctor who became known by his partisan name Doktor Anton. Ciccarelli was an Italian military doctor who joined the Slovenian partisan movement after Italy's capitulation on September 8, 1943.

During the war, Ciccarelli organized a network of partisan hospitals and medical posts in the Primorska region and also worked at the renowned Franja Partisan Hospital. After the war, he returned to Italy and lived in Giugliano, considering it his home despite being born in Novara.

While his name is known in Slovenia, his life story in Italy was largely confined to the research of a few historians and the memories preserved by his family, including his son Feliciano Ciccarelli. The initiative to name a street or square after him in Giugliano aims to bring greater recognition to his wartime contributions and humanitarian efforts.

The plan is part of broader efforts to commemorate his memory through various initiatives, ensuring his legacy as a symbol of the partisan movement and its extensive, well-organized medical activities is not forgotten.
