Students will not need epidemiological clearance after school holidays under new rule

Parents in Romania will no longer need to visit a doctor for an epidemiological certificate every time their children return to classes after a school holiday. Under the rules for the 2026-2027 school year, nurseries, kindergartens and schools cannot request the document solely because a child is returning from vacation.

The provision appears in the methodology approved by a joint order of the health and education ministers. The methodology sets out the medical documents required when children join an educational community and the circumstances in which documents must be submitted later.

A different rule applies after an infectious-contagious illness. Students and university students must provide a medical certificate, while nursery and preschool children need an epidemiological certificate confirming that they are fit to return to the community. The child’s treating doctor issues the documents.

Medical documents are still required when newly enrolled children begin the school year. For nursery or kindergarten enrollment, parents must submit a medical enrollment certificate, an epidemiological certificate and proof of vaccination issued by the family doctor.

The documents required for preparatory class and ninth-grade enrollment depend in part on whether the child’s previous school has its own medical office. Where one exists, the school doctor issues the medical record and certificate. Where it does not, the family doctor provides the enrollment certificate and vaccination proof. Similar requirements apply to transfers between educational institutions, with the school doctor or family doctor providing the relevant records depending on the institution.
