Sumatran Orangutan Wenda Gives Birth to Female Infant After 12 Years in the Wild

Wenda, a Sumatran orangutan released into the Jantho Nature Reserve in Aceh Besar, Indonesia, in 2014, has successfully given birth to a female infant in the wild. This event marks a significant achievement for the country's ongoing orangutan rehabilitation and release programs.

Minister of Forestry Raja Juli Antoni stated that the birth is a testament to the government's commitment to conservation efforts. He emphasized the administration's dedication to strengthening conservation initiatives, cracking down on illegal wildlife trade, and ensuring that released orangutans have the opportunity to thrive and reproduce in their natural environment.

The Head of the Aceh Natural Resources Conservation Center (BKSDA), Ujang Wisnu Barata, attributed the success to the collaborative efforts of the government, conservation partners, and the local community in safeguarding the Jantho Nature Reserve. He believes that continued synergy among all parties will ensure the future of Sumatran orangutans and their habitat.

Wenda was initially brought to the SOCP Sibolangit Orangutan Quarantine and Rehabilitation Center in 2009 as a juvenile. After a period of rehabilitation, she was transferred to the Jantho Orangutan Reintroduction Center before her release in 2014. Her progress in the wild has been closely monitored by the Post Release Monitoring (PRM) team, who confirmed her pregnancy in January 2026 and observed her caring for her newborn offspring in late July 2026.
