Supreme Court allows BNP lawmaker to continue duties

A four-member bench of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, has removed a petition from its docket that sought to prevent Sarowar Alamgir, a lawmaker from Chattogram-2 (Fatikchhari), from performing his duties. This decision effectively allows Alamgir to continue serving as a member of Parliament.

The Attorney General, Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal, stated that the petition was dropped because the full text of the High Court's verdict in the case had already been released. The High Court had previously declared the Election Commission's decision to reject Alamgir's nomination paper illegal. The Election Commission subsequently published a gazette declaring Alamgir the winner, and he was sworn in as an MP.

The petition to bar Alamgir was filed by Muhammad Nurul Amin, a Jamaat-e-Islami candidate who contested the same constituency. Amin had sought to stay the High Court's verdict. Despite the Supreme Court's action, Amin's lawyer, Mohammad Shishir Manir, indicated that they intend to file a leave-to-appeal petition challenging the High Court's ruling once a certified copy is obtained.
