Survey: Halal Logo Influences Product Choices for 83% of Indonesian Consumers

For most Indonesian consumers, the halal logo is not a minor detail on a package. A Populix survey found that 83% consider it a main factor when choosing products, while the figure rises to 93% for food.

The survey, conducted in March 2023 among 1,014 respondents for the report “Insight and Customer Perspective of Halal Industry in Indonesia,” was cited by the Halal Product Assurance Agency, known as BPJPH. BPJPH chief Ahmad Haikal Hasan said the figures showed how central halal certainty had become to consumer decisions.

He said mechanisms for assuring halal status, including for imported goods, were important because they gave the public protection and certainty. Under BPJPH Regulation No. 4 of 2026, foreign products must undergo halal conformity assurance before entering, circulating in, or being traded in Indonesia, even if they already hold halal certification from another country.

The regulation followed discussions coordinated by the Coordinating Ministry for Human Development and Cultural Affairs and a harmonisation process at the Ministry of Law involving relevant ministries and agencies. Haikal said the measure should provide both halal certainty and business certainty, giving consumers protection while clarifying companies’ obligations.

“Ultimately, halal certainty also provides added value for products and supports the growth of the halal economic ecosystem,” Haikal said. BPJPH also urged importers and inspection bodies to understand and prepare for the requirements so the system for imported products could operate effectively.
