Suspect in case of support for Hamas released from pre-trial detention

The release of a 60-year-old man, initially detained on suspicion of supporting Hamas, marks a significant development in a case that has been shrouded in secrecy. While Copenhagen Police have stated that continued pre-trial detention is no longer necessary, the individual remains charged. This decision comes just days before a scheduled court hearing regarding his continued detention, raising questions about the evidence and the progression of the investigation.

The man was apprehended as part of a large-scale counter-terrorism operation in December 2023, involving multiple police districts and the Danish Security and Intelligence Service (PET). Initially, the suspicion centered on the purchase of drones for Hamas, an organization designated as a terrorist group by the EU. However, the basis for detention was later altered to focus on alleged money transfers to foreign entities, including those in Europe and the Middle East.

This case, with its alleged links to the banned group Loyal To Familia (LTF) and Hamas, has seen several other individuals arrested or charged, all of whom have since been released. The lack of public insight into the evidence, due to closed-door court proceedings, makes it difficult to ascertain the full scope of the allegations. The man, who is protected by a gag order, maintains his innocence, and his release from detention, while not an acquittal, signifies a shift in the legal proceedings.
