Suspected gold ore thieves granted bail

Two men accused of stealing gold ore from the Asanko Gold Mining Limited site have been granted bail by the Nkawie Circuit Court. Robert Mensah, 26, and Paul Udeze, 27, both pleaded not guilty to the charges of conspiracy to steal and stealing.

The court set their bail at GH¢100,000 each, with the requirement of two sureties. The incident occurred around midnight on June 15, when security personnel observed the two individuals carrying sacks of gold ore away from the mining site located in the Amansie West District.

The complainant and some colleague security guards saw the accused persons carrying away eight ores of gold whose value could not be determined then, concealed in sacks from the mining site.

According to the prosecution, led by Chief Inspector Anthony Ohene Gyan, the complainant, Jonas Alban, the security supervisor, and his colleagues confronted and arrested the accused. In their initial statements to the police, Mensah and Udeze admitted to the offenses. Following investigations, they were formally charged and brought before the court.
