Suspected killer of singer's mother-in-law captured in Panama

Andrés Felipe Arias, known by the alias ‘Chino Arias,’ has been apprehended in Panama by authorities in a joint operation involving the Colombian Police and Interpol. Arias was reportedly the most sought-after individual for the murder of María del Pilar Zea Cobo, the mother-in-law of Colombian reggaeton singer Pipe Calderón, who was known in criminal circles as ‘La Reina’.

An Interpol Red Notice had been issued for Arias. Investigations suggest that after committing the crime in Medellín, Arias fled Colombia and remained a fugitive for over a year before being located in Panama. He is now awaiting deportation or extradition to Colombia to face charges of aggravated homicide and illegal arms possession.

The murder of Zea Cobo, which occurred on May 8, 2025, in the parking lot of the Mall del Este shopping center in Medellín's El Poblado neighborhood, has unveiled a complex network of drug trafficking and betrayals. Zea Cobo, operating as ‘La Reina,’ was reportedly under investigation by federal courts in Florida and Texas for her alleged involvement in transnational cocaine trafficking to Central and North America. She had also reportedly begun cooperating as an informant with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

The primary hypothesis among authorities is that ‘Chino Arias’ carried out the assassination as a settlement of scores related to drug trafficking disputes or in retaliation for the information Zea Cobo was providing to U.S. justice. With Arias's capture, Colombian authorities aim to not only establish his direct role in the homicide but also to identify the intellectual perpetrators behind the attack and determine if Arias acted under the orders of any criminal structure.
