Swiss winger Vargas to miss Sevilla’s match against Espanyol with knee problem

Rubén Vargas will not be available when Sevilla visit Espanyol on Sunday after a right-knee problem prevented the Swiss international from training with his teammates.

Sevilla said Vargas has external parameniscitis in his right knee and is receiving specific treatment. The club added that his condition would be monitored as he recovers.

The winger had remained involved in speculation over a possible departure until the end of Spain’s recently closed transfer window. Coach Luis García Plaza acknowledged that transfer markets can leave teams needing to adjust, but said Vargas was still part of his plans.

“Now Vargas has some discomfort, but the boy is in good spirits and stable,” García Plaza said. “In the end, he is one of ours and, if we recover his best level, he is important.” The coach added that Vargas played many minutes under him last season and could contribute again if he is physically fit.
