Taichung Teacher Attacked by Special Education Student; Legislators Urge Review of School Safety

A serious incident involving a student attacking a teacher has prompted calls for improved school safety measures in Taiwan. The attack occurred on August 5th at a junior high school in Taichung, where a special education student reportedly assaulted a female teacher.

The teacher had approached the student, who was wandering during summer remedial classes, to guide him back to his seat. In response, the student allegedly became agitated, broke a broomstick, and used it to strike the teacher. The assault resulted in facial fractures and a torn iris, with the teacher initially facing the risk of blindness.

Following the incident, legislators have urged the Ministry of Education to conduct a thorough review of the existing school safety systems. They are also advocating for a re-evaluation of the compensation system for teachers who become victims of student violence. The Teachers' Union Federation of Taiwan has also expressed concern and called for action to protect educators.
