Tainan's century-old 'Yaodao Hall' reborn as arts and cultural landmark

Tainan's historic "Yaodao Hall," a century-old wooden structure that once served judicial and educational functions, has been reborn as a vibrant center for arts and culture. Officially reopened as "Yao Dao, Quan Theater," the revitalized building is set to become a new landmark for artistic exchange in the city.

The renovation, which took four years to complete, meticulously preserved the original wooden construction techniques and historical textures of the building. This significant cultural asset, one of only four remaining wooden martial arts training halls in Taiwan, now functions as a platform for artistic performances, cultural dialogues, and community engagement. Mayor Huang Wei-che emphasized that preserving cultural heritage goes beyond mere restoration; it involves reintegrating history into the daily lives of citizens.

The opening of 'Yao Dao, Quan Theater' signifies the rebirth of a century-old historic site and demonstrates Tainan's achievements in balancing cultural preservation, urban development, and cultural governance.

The name "Yao Dao, Quan Theater" draws from the building's original name, "Yaodao Hall," and its location in the historical "Quan" district (formerly "Quan Town"). The "Quan" (泉) in the name also signifies the "spring" of cultural vitality. The Cultural Affairs Bureau director, Huang Ya-ling, stated that the theater aims to transform the heritage site into a dynamic space for the public through diverse programming, including music, drama, traditional arts, lectures, and lifestyle experiences.

"Yao Dao, Quan Theater" will also connect with Tainan's annual arts festivals and cultural events, inviting performing arts groups to showcase their work. The surrounding spaces, including the former director's dormitory and official residences, will be developed to include dining, curated retail, and lifestyle aesthetics, creating a historical district that blends culture, art, and daily life. This initiative showcases Tainan's commitment to balancing cultural preservation with urban development and governance.
