Taipei City Inspects Eslite Xinyi Store After Rat Falling Video Surfaces

Taipei City Government has taken swift action following public concern over a viral video allegedly showing a rat falling from the ceiling in a department store's food court. A joint inspection by the Department of Environmental Protection, Department of Health, and Department of Commerce was conducted at the Eslite Spectrum Xinyi Store.

The inspection aimed to address potential sources of rodent infestation and ensure compliance with environmental and health regulations. While the specific incident of a rat falling is under scrutiny, the city government emphasized the importance of robust environmental management. This includes ensuring air pollution control equipment, such as electrostatic precipitators, are properly maintained to prevent the escape of oil fumes and odors, which can attract pests.

Furthermore, health officials are reinforcing rodent prevention strategies with food businesses within the food court, advising them on the 'three nos' for rodents: 'do not let them come in' by sealing entry points, 'do not let them stay' by maintaining a clean environment, and 'do not let them eat' by securing food sources. The commerce department also reviewed the store's cleaning records and waste management practices, noting that the store has been conducting monthly rodent control since January 2025 and that waste bins are properly covered. This proactive approach by the city government aims to reassure the public and ensure that commercial establishments maintain high standards of hygiene and pest control.
