Taipei Mayor Investigates Kindergarten Abuse Allegations, Addresses Advertising Claims

Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an has pledged a swift and severe response to allegations of mistreatment at a local private kindergarten chain. The city is investigating claims of collective mistreatment of young children, a case that has also drawn attention due to reports that the mayor's own son attended a daycare center operated by the same organization.

Chiang addressed the issue, emphasizing that the investigation will be "strict, heavy, and fast." He confirmed that teachers involved have been suspended and that surveillance footage is being reviewed to determine appropriate disciplinary actions. The mayor also stated that the kindergarten group will be comprehensively inspected for any violations. He reiterated that he has never authorized the use of his family's name or attendance for the kindergarten's recruitment efforts.

The Taipei City Education Bureau is pursuing a dual approach, combining administrative penalties with criminal prosecution. The bureau has already filed a complaint with the prosecutor's office, submitting evidence including surveillance footage, details of the accused individuals, and records of the alleged mistreatment. Administratively, the bureau has imposed fines totaling NT$506,000 and is providing resources and support to affected families. A parent briefing was held last week, and the mayor received a petition from parents, promising expedited action.

The bureau condemned the actions of those involved, stating that the investigation extends beyond administrative sanctions to include potential criminal charges. Suspected offenses include assault and obstruction of child development, and authorities are cooperating fully with the investigation to ensure that those responsible face legal consequences. The administrative investigation is expected to conclude by the end of July.
